Speaking Truthfully

Paul reminds the Colossian believers that they have taken off the old self with its old ways. One of the old practices of the old self is lying. Paul says:

Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. – Colossians 3:9-10 (NIV)

As followers of Jesus, we need to speak truthfully to one another. We need to be known as people of honesty. Don’t lie to your spouse or your children. Don’t lie to your boss. Don’t lie to your brothers and sisters in church. Paul told the Ephesians to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). The old self tells lies. The new self speaks the truth in love. If you are tempted to lie or to perpetuate lies today, remember that you have been changed and it is time to come clean. Tell the truth and do away with the lies.
