In 2 Peter 3, the apostle Peter wrote about the coming Day of the Lord. He describes that day as coming like a thief. In other words, no one will expect it when it arrives. He also said that the universe and the earth will be cleansed with fire. Everything in this present order of things will be laid bare. Then, something awesome will happen. Peter wrote:
But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. – 2 Peter 3:13 (NIV)
God will create a new universe, including a new earth and this will be unlike the present one. The universe in which we now live has been tainted and marred by sin and unrighteousness. The new heavens and earth will be free from sin. The enemy will be done away with forever as he is sent to his eternal punishment. There will be no more sin, hurt or pain caused by the enemy. Instead, everything will be made whole and everything will be restored. We will dwell with God and be His people forever. What a day of rejoicing that will be.
