A Special Time

John 6:52-59 (NIV)

Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

One of the mysteries of the Lord’s Supper is the Christ’s presence when we gather together to partake of His body and His blood. Some believe that the emblems become His literal body and blood. Others believe that the time of Communion is a memorial feast instituted by Christ to serve as a reminder of His death and resurrection and return. Either way, it is a special time in a worship service. Jesus commanded us to “do this in remembrance of Me.” We find that it feeds our souls as we remember Jesus. Such a small bit of bread and the fruit of the vine can feed our hearts and souls for a week (or longer depending on your tradition).
I have heard it said that it is a special time where we look back at Christ’s sacrifice. We also look to the present as we understand Christ’s presence in worship with as us 2 or more gather in His name. We also look to the future when we will eat and drink it anew with Jesus in the Kingdom of Heaven. It is a special time indeed. May we never take this wonderful gift for granted.
PRAYER: Thank You, Father, for Jesus. Thank You for the Lord’s Supper that nourishes our souls. May I never take Jesus or His loving sacrifice for granted. Remind me today, O God, of Your grace and mercy and how You have saved me from my sins. I ask these things in the name of Jesus, amen.
