Because He Will

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” — Matthew 1:20-21 (NIV)

Not He might.  Not He can.  He will.  He will save His people from their sins.  This is why Jesus came.  Plain and simple.  Jesus Christ came to save sinners (1 Timothy 1:15, NIV).  Joseph was scared because his betrothed was pregnant.  What would people say?  What would they do to her?  What about his reputation?  God sent an angel to reassure Joseph that it was of God and to not be afraid.

That’s one of the greatest messages of Christmas: do not be afraid.  This vital event can cast out fear from our hearts.  Are you afraid of being alone?  Jesus is Immanuel, God with us.  He is with you.  Fear of punishment for sin?  Jesus came to save people from their sins.  There is no reason to fear for Christ is the Prince of Peace and came to bring peace between God and humanity.  There is no reason to fear death or hell because Jesus came and He will save His people from their sins.

PRAYER: Thank You, Lord God, for sending Your Son, Immanuel. Thank You for saving me from my sins and from fear. I pray that You would remind me of Your presence every moment of this day. I need You and Your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
