Complaining About Worship?

One of the things about which Christians complain the most often is worship. It seems that everyone has an opinion on worship services. I don’t like these new songs. I don’t like these old songs. I think that the music is too loud. I don’t think that the music is loud enough. I don’t like it when the lights are out. I don’t like it when the lights are turned up. Everyone has an opinion about worship. The apostle Paul might help us by directing us to the object of our worship. He wrote:

To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. – Philippians 4:20 (NIV)

In the statements that I listed above, they all had one word in common: “I.” When we let our personal preferences get in the way of our worship of God, we’re no longer worshiping God alone. We need to remember that God is the object of our worship. Instead of complaining about our worship services, why don’t you pray for the people preparing and leading them? Remember that they are trying to worship God, too. When you complain to them after a service, you’re distracting them from worshiping the Lord. Someone complained to pastor and author Francis Chan once and said that they didn’t think that the worship service was very good. He said that that was okay because “we weren’t worshiping you.”

Making Music

Good Monday morning to you! Music is a wonderful gift from God. Music can allow us to express a variety of emotions – anger, joy, frustration, love, sadness and more. It can also help us express our praise and gratitude to God for all He’s done. Paul wrote in Colossians 3:16:
Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. – Colossians 3:16 (NIV)
We can also use music as a way of encouraging and teaching one another. Music has a way of working itself up from our hearts and out of our mouths. What kinds of music do you listen to? What kinds of songs do you like to sing? Remember that it is a gift from God and the songs of our hearts should be sung to Him first.
