Abiding In Him

1 John 2:24-29 (NIV)

As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.

26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.

John uses the word “remain” a few times in this passage.  The New American Standard Bible translates the word as “abide.”  He says that they should allow what they heard from the beginning (the good news of Jesus Christ) should remain in the them.  If they stayed faithful to the Gospel, then they would remain in the Father and the Son.  He said that the anointing they had received remained in them.  This is the Holy Spirit.  In the book of Acts (2:38), Peter commanded the crowd to repent of their sins and be baptized and they would receive the forgiveness of their sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit would continue to teach them and they should remain in Him.  They were to continue (remain or abide) in Him so that when Jesus appeared, they would not be ashamed but confident.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to perseverance.  We are called to abide or remain in Christ.  Jesus is our anchor.  He is the One in whom we can abide and remain.  He is a rock solid foundation for our lives.  When the world around us is falling apart, we can put our trust in the One who holds it all together.  When the storms of life arise, Jesus is the One who is our solid foundation of rock.  When we are afraid, we can run to Him for He is our refuge and strong tower.  We need to be faithful to the One who is always faithful.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me to abide in You.  I want You to be my dwelling place.  I want to live in You and live for You today.  Help me to persevere through the trials and storms of life that I am facing today.  In Your name I ask these things, amen.
