Reflecting Our Father

There are two definitions of righteousness that we need to know. First, you can be declared right with God by His grace through faith in Jesus. Second, to be righteous is to do the right things. That second definition is what John has in view here. He wrote:

If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him. – 1 John 2:29 (NIV)

Jesus did the right things all of the time. He never sinned in any way. He was the perfect Son of God. When we do the right things, we show that we have been born of God. Have you ever seen a child misbehaving and thought, “What is wrong with his parents?” Have you ever seen a child acting up and said to yourself, “Why don’t her parents do something?” Our behavior reflects on our parents. As children of God, our behavior reflects our relationship with our Father. If we truly know who we are and to whom we belong, we’ll strive to live lives of righteousness for He is righteous.
