The Lord Disciplines His Children

When things aren’t going our way, we may be tempted to think, “I must have done something wrong. God is punishing me.”  Or we’ll wonder if God is angry with us because it seems as though He is withholding blessings from us. The Lord does discipline us as Solomon writes about in Proverbs 3:

My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline,
and do not resent his rebuke,

because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
as a father the son he delights in. – Proverbs 3:11-12 (NIV)

There is a difference between punishment and discipline. Discipline and rebuke seek to correct wrong behavior. God doesn’t punish us out of anger, but instead He disciplines out of love. The Lord wants us to look more like Jesus and sometimes the only way to correct wrong behavior is to discipline us or let us face the consequences of our poor decisions. Just because we have to learn a lesson “the hard way” does not mean that God is mad at us. It may be the only way we are going to learn.
