Choosing Spiritual Amnesia

Have you ever looked in a mirror in order to check your hair or the fit of your clothing, walked away and forgotten how you looked? James says that when we hear the Word of God and fail to do what it says, it’s as though we forget what we look like. This is what he wrote:

Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. – James 1:23-24 (NIV)

The Word of God was not meant to just be heard or read. It was meant to be lived out each day. When the Word says to do something, we are expected to do it. When the Bible says to not do something, we are expected to not do it. Otherwise, we are guilty of choosing spiritual amnesia. We cannot claim ignorance. We’ve heard the Word. We’ve got the Bible in our homes, our churches, our hotel rooms and on our phones. It is up to us to obey it.
