We Don’t Do These Things Anymore

Good Friday morning to you! After telling us to keep our eyes fixed on things above and not on earthly things, Paul tells us what some of those earthly things are in Colossians 3:4 (NIV). He says:

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

The fact is that this list of sins and vices is incompatible with being a Christian. If we are to be focused on heavenly things, the earthly nature must be put to death. If you are a Christian, you don’t do these things anymore. You are no longer controlled by your earthly nature. Instead, we must kill the earthly, sinful nature. Sexually immoral behavior, which is any kind of sexual activity outside of God’s design for sex, must be done away with. That includes impurity and lust. Evil desires and greed must be put to death as well. Followers of Jesus have to live differently because we are different. We know that Jesus died to save us and forgive us. He died so we could go to Heaven. Don’t settle for an earthly life. Instead, live like you’re on your way to Heaven.
