Protection And Correction

A good shepherd not only provided for his sheep, but he would also protect them and keep them in line. To do this, he had two devices at his disposal: the rod and the staff. The rod was used for protection and the staff was used to keep the sheep from wandering away.

your rod and your staff,
they comfort me. – Psalm 23:4b (ESV)

Notice that David finds comfort in them because with these two implements, the sheep know that they are safe. God will not only protect us from all of the forces of evil, but as our loving Shepherd, He can also keep us from wandering away. He is always looking out for us as He guides us safely home. Remember that your Shepherd cares for you and He is able to protect you and correct you. May you take great comfort in the presence and care of your Shepherd today.
