Loving The World This Christmas

John 3:17 (NIV)

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Many people, whether they believe in Jesus or not, have some familiarity with John 3:16. What we’re not as familiar with is John 3:17. We know that God, out of His great love for the world, sent Jesus to give us everlasting life. I think that John 3:17 is just as important. John 3:16 tells us about the mission God’s Son came to fulfill. John 3:17 tells us the opposite. It tells us about what God’s Son didn’t come to do. He didn’t come to condemn the world.
My hope this Christmas is that more of Jesus’ followers will take John 3:17 to heart. As followers of Jesus, we need to follow His example and adopt His mission. We need to love the world like God so loved the world. We need to be a part of His plan to save the world through Jesus. We do not need to condemn the world. If Jesus didn’t come to condemn the world, then we can rest assured that God didn’t send us to do the job, either. There is only one Judge of the world and we are not Him.
Instead of judging and condemning the world, let’s do all that we can to love the world like Jesus does. Let’s spread His message of love, hope, joy and peace this Christmas. Instead of shaming and condemning people into the Kingdom of God, let’s love them into Jesus’ arms.
PRAYER: I pray today, O God, for an opportunity to love someone in Jesus’ name. Forgive me for the times I have harshly judged others or condemned them. Help me to be more like You and to love the world like You do. In Jesus’ saving name, amen.
