In Search Of Jesus

John 6:22-24 (NIV)

The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.

I love how the crowds were searching for Jesus. I believe that people are still searching for Him today. Many do not realize that He is the One for whom they are looking. They look for purpose and meaning from people and things that cannot give them purpose and meaning. They want hope from things that cannot give them hope. They want life from things that cannot give them life. Only Jesus can truly give us these things.
The problem is that the church in 21st century America isn’t showing people where to find Jesus. We who follow Him look nothing like Him. We’re full of hatred and division. We’re full of pride and arrogance. We’re full of self-serving attitudes and self-seeking people. We are not acting like Jesus who came to serve and not to be served. We are not acting like Jesus who came to love, heal and forgive. We must do a better job of showing people the real Jesus. It means we have to welcome sinners who don’t have it all together. Why? Because that’s what Jesus did. It means we have to help people find healing and hope because that’s what Jesus did. It means we have to love each other no matter what. It’s what Jesus did. We’re not going to agree on everything. We’re going to step on each others’ toes and hurt each other from time to time. We’re going to do the things that human beings with sinful natures do to each other. We’ll lie, gossip, cheat and generally screw everything up in our relationships. That’s when we have an opportunity to show people the real Jesus. That’s when we can forgive and be united in the love of God.
People aren’t necessarily looking for a church as much as they are looking for her Groom. People want to find Jesus. It is our job to show Him to them.

PRAYER: Father, help our churches to show people the real Jesus. May they see Him in us. May they feel His love, mercy and forgiveness. May they experience Your grace in our gatherings. May those who are looking for Jesus find Him so that they will know Him. In His name, amen.
