Do You Want To Get Well?

John 5:1-9 (NIV)

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him,“Do you want to get well?”

7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

There was a superstition regarding the pool at Bethesda. It was believed that an angel would descend and stir up the waters in the pool. The first person who could get in the water when this happened could be healed. Whether this was true or not, we don’t really know.
On this particular day, Jesus approached the pool. He discovered that there was a man there who had been an invalid for 38 years. Jesus singled him out for healing. Why this man? Why not any or all of the countless others who had been there for quite some time? Only Jesus knows.
Jesus approached the man and asked him, “Do you want to get well?” (John 5:6, NIV) and the man indicates that he’s been trying to do this for quite some time. Yes! He wants to get well, but he’s been unable to do what it takes on his own.
What is interesting is that Jesus heals the man without asking him anything about his faith in Him or even God. Jesus puts no stipulations or conditions on the man for healing. He just heals him. Muscles that had atrophied were filled with strength. He hadn’t walked in thirty-eight years! Now he was up and moving about by the power of Jesus.
Jesus has the power to heal us today. He heals broken hearts, minds and bodies. He gives strength to our atrophied faith muscles. Even when we don’t quite believe the right things. Even when we don’t have anyone else to help us. Jesus knows all about your troubled heart and soul. He’s coming for you and He’s got healing in His hands. Reach out to Him in faith and let Him pick you up and heal you.
PRAYER: Lord God, I am in need of Your healing today. My heart and soul are troubled. I feel alone and desperate. No one else can help me but You. I need Your healing touch. You know my pain and my heartache. Give life to my atrophied soul. In Jesus’ healing name, amen.
