Break Free From The Routine

John 2:1-12 (NIV)

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

What Mary tells the servants is good advice for all Christians to follow. “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5, NIV). His mother, Mary, knew that Jesus could do something in this situation. I’m not sure if she knew exactly what He would do, but she knew that He was able. Jesus changed ordinary water into extraordinary wine. He can do the same thing with our ordinary lives. He can make them extraordinary. All we have to do is to do whatever He tells us.
Maybe your’re living your life in the doldrums. Maybe you’re tired of the “same old, same old” routine. Perhaps you’ve grown weary of the rut. It’s time to break out of the routine and get out of life’s rut and start seeking the will and way of God. If life has become a burdensome chore, then you need to do what Jesus tells you to do. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He gives rest for our weary souls. I believe that He also gives purpose to our bored souls. Many people are searching for meaning and purpose to their ordinary lives. Jesus can give us an extraordinary purpose – to live for Him on the adventure of a lifetime.
Don’t settle for the same stuff, different day kind of life. Let Jesus take control by doing whatever He tells you to do. Seek His will and His way and He’ll lead you into abundant life.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I am tired of the rut and the routine. I want an extraordinary life with Jesus. Help me to break free from the boring and to embrace your will boldly. Lead me today in Your will and in Your way. Thank You for Jesus, amen.
