Lavished With Love

1 John 3

New International Version 1984 (NIV1984)

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:1-10, NIV)

1 John 3:1 is one of my favorite verses in the entire book.  Think of the word “lavish.”  What comes to mind?  I think of a palatial estate where everything is covered in gold.  I think of “caviar dreams and champagne wishes.”  Words like luxury and overabundance come to mind.  That’s what God has done for us with His love!  His love for us overflows to us.  He has so much love for us that it is an overabundance of love!  He has so much love for us that He has adopted us into His family and made us His children.  God, in His great love, has brought us out of the darkness and into His light.  We were like orphans with no family to call our own and He brought us into His family and made us His children.  We were fatherless and He became our Father.  So how do we respond to this amazing gift?  We do what is right.  We make good choices and wise decisions.  We live lives of righteousness.  Not to earn God’s favor by doing good deeds.  We have already been favored by God (that’s what grace is!).  Now we do the things that God asks of us and that pleases Him.  When we make good choices and do the right things, God is pleased.  When we do the wrong things and make poor choices and decisions, God disciplines us (because He loves us – Hebrews 12:6) and we must learn from our mistakes.  God is a God of restoration and when we sin, He forgives us and restores us to the honored place of being part of His family.  So live as a child of God today!  Live as a child of the King!  You are a part of His family and He loves you so much that He has made you His precious prince or princess.
PRAYER: Father in Heaven, thank You for Your incredible love. Thank You for lavishing it upon me. Thank You for calling me Your child. Help me to live as a child of the King today and to honor You with my life. Amen.
