Certain Of One Thing

Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished,
but those who are righteous will go free. – Proverbs 11:21 (NIV)

The LORD detests all the proud of heart.
Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. – Proverbs 16:5 (NIV)

There is coming a day when those who have perpetrated evil and who have mocked the Lord God by their lifestyles will be punished.  Though it may seem as though they are winning in life, they will have lost that which is most important – eternal life.  What do we do in these situations?  We beg and plead for justice to be done.  We want the wicked to “get what’s coming to ’em!”  We want those who have done awful, despicable things to be punished.  They should get what they deserve!

Why should we desire that anyone get what they deserve when we don’t want what we deserve?  Mercy stepped into our lives at one point or another and keeps us from getting what we deserve.  We all deserve death and Hell for we are all guilty, vile sinners.  We have all missed the mark.  We have all lied, cheated, lusted, stolen, coveted and committed a whole host of despicable sins, have we not?  Why should we be mercifully forgiven and others not?  Our desire should be the same as God’s desire.  1 Timothy 2:3b-4 (NIV) says that “God our Savior…wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

While we can be certain of one thing — that those who have perpetrated evil and have live lives of wickedness will be punished, our desire should be for grace and mercy.  Jesus died for wicked sinners.  Wicked sinners like us.

PRAYER: Thank You for Your mercy, Father. Thank You for forgiving me through Your Son, Jesus. I pray for those who do not know You today. May I have an opportunity to talk about Your love, grace and mercy with someone who needs to know Jesus today. Amen.
