The Power Of Jesus’ Touch

Matthew 8:2-4

New International Version (NIV)

2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. 4 Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

The power of touch is an amazing one.  Jesus is approached by a leper who knows that Jesus can heal him.  Luke says that Jesus was being followed by large crowds and that the man begged Jesus to heal him.  He was desperate.  Leprosy meant that you were kicked out of the community. You had to live outside the city.  You had to leave your wife and kids.  What would happen to your family?  Who would take care of them?  This was devastating and you would eventually die.  Alone.
One day you hear that He is coming near.  You’ve heard stories of miracles.  You’ve heard that He just might be the Messiah!  Could it be?  Could He heal your body?  Could He heal your aching heart?  You decide that you’re going to go for it.  As the crowd approaches, you make your move.  You run to Him and as the crowd gasps in horror at your disfigured face, you begin to beg and plead with the One called Jesus.  In faith you cry out,

Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean. – Matthew 8:2 (NIV)

You wait for His reply.  It seems as though hours pass.  What will He say?  What will He do?  You’re unclean and there is no reason for Him to do anything for you?  You may even start to doubt yourself.  “Who do you think you are?  Why should He help you?  You’re no one special!  Maybe you should just go back to the other lepers.”  Then you feel something you haven’t felt in quite some time.  Touch.  Jesus touched you.  He touched you.  You see, lepers were not to be touched.  To touch someone with leprosy would render the person who touched them ceremonially unclean.  It was absolutely forbidden.

He then utters the sweetest words you’ve ever heard, “I am willing.  Be clean!”  Just like that your leprous skin begins to transform!  Your world has been transformed!  A million thoughts rush through your mind!  By the end of this day, you will be tucking your kids into bed for the first time in weeks, maybe months!  You have been given the greatest gift!  You have been given your life back through the power of Jesus’ touch!

My friends, we are all like spiritual lepers.  We are all untouchable.  But Jesus is willing to touch our lives with His healing power.  He can heal our hearts.  He can heal our souls.  He can heal the broken places in our lives like none other.  We must simply believe and ask.  He will touch your life today and heal you in ways you’ve never even dreamed of.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for Jesus who has touched my life in many amazing ways. Thank You for the healing You have given me. I’m still broken and still in need of Your healing touch. Please heal me today in Jesus’ name, amen.
