Politics! Who Needs ‘Em?

Romans 13

New Living Translation (NLT)

Respect for Authority

13 Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience.

Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.

In Romans 13, Paul tells his followers to respect and obey the authorities that were in place.  God had put the authorities in government in place to accomplish His will.  In our limited understanding it may be difficult to see how this is possible.  In 21st century America, we have serious doubts about our government working to accomplish God’s will – no matter which party is in office.  Conservatives don’t trust liberals and vice versa.  Democrats don’t trust Republicans and vice versa.  Some Christians claim that God is on their side because of certain issues and other Christians believe that God is on their side because of other issues.  The truth of the matter is that God judges the heart.  He knows the hearts of politicians and voters alike.  He will judge us all.  I believe the best thing that we can do when it comes to voting is the following:
1. Read your Bible so you know what God says and what you believe
2. Pray for our country and for your decision as you go to the voting booth
3. Study up on the issues to know what is at stake
4. Research the candidates to know where they stand with regard to what God says and what the issues are
5. Pray again that God’s will is done and that He will lead and guide our elected officials
Be an informed voter and trust in God’s sovereignty to do what will best accomplish His perfect will.
May we live peaceful lives within the framework of the laws of our land to bring about His perfect will.
May we demonstrate God’s love, grace and patience to all when it comes to the leadership of our land.
May God continue to bless America.
May America begin to bless God.
