A Spiritual Thirst

Psalm 63 (NIV)

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
your right hand upholds me.

Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;
they will go down to the depths of the earth.
10 They will be given over to the sword
and become food for jackals.

11 But the king will rejoice in God;
all who swear by God will glory in him,
while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

In Psalm 63, we see that David, in the desert of Judah, writes of his thirst for God.  I love verse one:

You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water. – Psalm 63:1 (NIV)

Here is David, out in the wilderness and the desert.  There is no water and he is physically thirsty.  But he says that this is nothing compared to his spiritual thirst for God.  His physical thirst reminds him of his spiritual hunger and thirst for the one true God.  Why?  Because only God truly satisfies (verse 5).  Verses 2-5 are a wonderful expression of praise to God.  I especially like verse 3:

Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you. – Psalm 63:3 (NIV)

The love of God is even better than life.  Life without God’s love is hopeless and meaningless.  God is our help (verse 7) and He holds us up (verse 8).
When we realize just how good God is and how much He loves us, satisfies our longings, helps us and supports us, we need to remember to praise Him.  God should be more than just a passing thought.  He should be at the forefront of our minds all the time.  You are always on His mind and He should always be on ours.
PRAYER: God, I praise and glorify You today.  I want You at the forefront of my thoughts today.  I want to know Your love that is better than life.  I pray that You will be my help throughout this day.  I need You and I love You.  Amen.
