God Is Love

1 John 4:13-18 (NIV)

This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

God is love.  He has filled us with His Spirit.  When we put our faith and trust in Christ, He washes us clean and fills us with His Spirit.  His Spirit guides us into truth and love.  His Spirit reminds us of God’s loving promises.  His Spirit teaches us and illumines God’s Word.  His Spirit is the deposit guaranteeing our salvation by God’s grace through faith in Jesus.  Why?  Because God is love.

God is love.  If you want to know love, you’ve got to know God.  God loves us.  God loves the world.  We do not have to be afraid of God because His love is perfect.  His perfect love drives out the fear of punishment.  God disciplines His children in order to correct, not to punish for the sake of punishment.  God loves us and therefore He disciplines us as loving parents discipline their children.  His discipline is always corrective and never punitive. Why?  Because God is love.

God is love.  There is nothing that God does that is not loving toward all He has made (Psalm 145:9).  He is constantly crying out across the universe, “I love you, world!”  He sent His Son, Jesus, to demonstrate His perfect love for the world.  He knows that we are weak, faulted and frail.  He knows that we are sinful.  He knows that we miss the mark and fail. Yet He loves us and forgives us anyway.  Why?  Because God is love.

PRAYER: Father God, thank You for Your perfect love.  Drive out the fear of punishment from within me.  Fill me with Your Spirit today.  Help me to love others as You have first loved me.  You are loving and good and You do not treat me as my sins deserve.  Thank You, Lord.  Amen.
