God’s Got Your Back

Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished,
but those who are righteous will go free.  — Proverbs 11:21 (NIV)

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.  Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. — Romans 12:17-21 (NIV)

How much do we really trust God?  Do we trust Him enough to know that no wicked person or wicked deed will go unpunished?  Do we trust Him enough to know that He’s got our back?  That those who seek to do us harm or take advantage of us or gossip about us are seen by our Heavenly Father and He is truly in charge and will work everything out in the end.  This is a tough issue.  We are so very human and when someone hurts us and cuts us deeply we want to take revenge.  To not only get even, but to punish them for what they’ve done to us.  In Scripture, God makes it pretty clear that that is not our job.

We’ve all been hurt by others and in a myriad of ways.  Perhaps you have been hurt by your spouse or another Christian.  Maybe he or she was a co-worker or a boss or a classmate.  Somewhere along this journey of life we have all been hurt by someone.  Don’t let bitterness take root in your heart as you plot revenge.  God knows and God’s got your back.  He’ll repay their hurtful words and actions.  Let God work in their lives and let God work on your heart.  Ask Him to take away the pain and fill your life with peace that surpasses understanding.  Ask Him for the strength to forgive others who have wronged you and trust Him to fight your battle for you.  He is a God of justice and will repay those who have wronged you.  And perhaps by your willingness to forgive there can be healing and your opponent might find their way to the gracious love of God expressed in Jesus.

PRAYER: Father, I need to trust You to fight my battles for me today.  There are people in my life who have hurt me and I need to forgive them and to let You handle my heart.  I ask that You would heal my heart and give peace to my soul.  Take away my desire for revenge and help me to leave this situation and my hurt in Your hands.  Amen.
