Jesus – The Good Shepherd King

Micah 5:1-6 (NIV)

Marshal your troops now, city of troops,
for a siege is laid against us.
They will strike Israel’s ruler
on the cheek with a rod.

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
    from ancient times.”

Therefore Israel will be abandoned
until the time when she who is in labor bears a son,
and the rest of his brothers return
    to join the Israelites.

He will stand and shepherd his flock
in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they will live securely, for then his greatness
will reach to the ends of the earth.

And he will be our peace
when the Assyrians invade our land
    and march through our fortresses.
We will raise against them seven shepherds,
    even eight commanders,
who will rule the land of Assyria with the sword,
the land of Nimrod with drawn sword.
He will deliver us from the Assyrians
    when they invade our land
    and march across our borders.

Micah prophesied the coming of the Messiah in clear terms in chapter 5, verse 2.  This Messiah would come from the city of David, Bethlehem, which was about 5 miles outside of Jerusalem.  Jerusalem would be laid to waste by the Babylonians after being besieged by King Nebuchadnezzar.  Though the city would be destroyed, God promised to send a Ruler who would restore Israel.  King Zedekiah was the last human king over Judah until the Messiah appeared.

Jesus, the Messiah, was no ordinary King, though.  Whereas many of Israel’s kings had failed throughout history, Jesus would never fail.  Even though He was crucified and killed, He would rise triumphantly over death and the grave!  He is the victorious Shepherd King of the world.  He does not rule His subjects with an iron scepter.  Rather, He lovingly leads and guides as the Good Shepherd who cares for His sheep.  His people will live in safety and security:

And they will live securely, for then his greatness
will reach to the ends of the earth. – Micah 5:4b (NIV)

As God’s people, Jesus’ followers have the security of eternal life by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.  Nothing can take us out of the hands of God except for ourselves.  But why would we ever choose to walk away from our God?  Why would we ever want to leave home?  God has provided all that we need, including the security of our home with Him.  Let us listen for the voice of our Shepherd and honor Him as our King by following Him where He leads.

PRAYER: Father, I thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, the Messiah.  I ask that today You would remind me of blessed assurance of my salvation by Your grace.  Thank You for rescuing me and saving me.  Help me to rest in Your promises, for I know that they are true.  Amen.
