Finding Favor With God

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David.  The virgin’s name was Mary.  The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.  But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.”  — Luke 1:26-30 (NIV)

The Greek word that is translated as “favor” in this passage is the same word that is translated as “grace”.  God chose Mary out of His grace.  It was a gift of His love that He chose her to be the mother of the Savior.  What kind of young woman was Mary?  What character traits must she have had to be chosen by God to raise the Lord?  To be favored by God!  To receive this gift of grace that no one else in history would ever know.

I think that Gabriel’s words could be applicable to the world and not just Mary.  We, though we are sinners, are highly favored by God, in that we have the opportunity to accept His gracious offer of salvation.  While we will obviously not give birth to the Savior, we are given the chance to be born again through Jesus.  We are highly favored indeed.  We have found favor with God for He has chosen all who will believe in His Son to receive salvation (Ephesians 1:11).  We are recipients of His grace and the objects of His favor.  Merry Christmas to us!

PRAYER: Thank You for Your grace, O God.  Thank You for bestowing Your favor on me through Your only Son, Jesus.  Amen.
