It Starts In The Mind

The LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked, but those of the pure are pleasing to him. — Proverbs 15:25 (NIV)

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.  All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts.  Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.  But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved. — Ephesians 2:1-5 (NIV)

The Hebrew word for thoughts in Proverbs 15:25 literally means to plan or scheme.  The Greek word from Ephesians 2:3 translated “thoughts” is a word that means understanding or mind.  In the Old Testament and the New Testament, the problem of sin starts in the brain.  The holy God we serve and who sent His Son to die to forgive our sins, detests sin.  Whether we sin with calculated intentionality or we just surrender to the cravings of the sinful nature, God cannot stand it.

This is why God sent Jesus.  He hated our sin so much that He had to do something about it.  Do you ever get so sick of something that you simply must do something about it?  That’s what God did.  God so loved the world that He sent Jesus.  There was no other way than to graciously offer up His Son for the redemption of all who will accept Him.  That’s what God did.  Though we were dead in sin, Jesus made us alive.

Now, because of what God has done for us, we think new thoughts.  Romans 12:2 (NIV) says to, “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”  It all comes back to the thoughts and the mind.  No longer will we think the thoughts of the wicked.  We are called to be pure in mind.  No longer will we give in to the thoughts of the sinful nature, but we will renew our minds each day by filling them with God’s Word so that we may do His will.  Let us give our thoughts and our minds to the Father this day.

PRAYER:  Help me, Father, to think new thoughts.  To be transformed by renewing my mind.  Fill me with Your Word that I may indeed be renewed.  I thank You that You have made me brand new by Your grace.  Let the Holy Spirit reign in me today.  Amen.
