This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him. — John 2:11 (NIV)
When Jesus changed water into wine at Cana in Galilee, two things happened according to John:
- He revealed His glory
- The disciples put their faith in Him
The first thing He did was He allowed the disciples (and others) to see Him for who He really is. Something had been hidden from them and now it had been revealed. When Dorothy and her merry band of misfits went to Oz, they found out that there was a puny little man hiding behind the image of the great and powerful Wizard of Oz. The opposite happened in Cana. The disciples discovered that there was a great and powerful God inside the man, Jesus of Nazareth. They saw Jesus as God in that demonstration of His divine power.
The disciples then had a choice. Would they believe? They could have shrugged it off as some sort of parlor trick or magic act. That would be ignoring the facts of the situation. There was water in those jugs and all of a sudden it was wine. Jesus had done something extraordinary! He had done something miraculous! Who could have done such a thing? Who could change the chemical properties of H2O into premium wine? God could. The light bulbs went on in their heads and they began to understand. God revealed Himself to some ordinary people in an extraordinary way. So they believed and put their faith in Jesus.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me to see Your glory today. Help me to believe You and to believe in You as God. You are God and I know that You can make my ordinary life extraordinary. Do what You will in my life as I learn to trust You more. Amen.
