Desiring The Stuff Of Earth

James 4:1-3 (NIV)
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
Envy.  Coveting.  Pride.  Selfishness.  These are the sins that cause fights and quarrels in the church.  These are the sins that are truly deadly in the life of the believer.  James gets right to the heart of the matter.
Our hearts desire things.  Our hearts desire stuff.  We are very materialistic by nature.  So we want other peoples’ stuff (envy).  We think murderous thoughts because we can’t have their stuff.  We covet what others have and it leads to bickering and fighting with them.  We have so much pride that we won’t go to God to ask Him for the desires of our hearts.  We refuse to humble ourselves before God Almighty.  It is because of our selfish motives that God wouldn’t answer those requests anyway.
We desire the things of this world that do not last.  We want the shiny new car.  We want the bigger house with the swimming pool.  We want the designer clothes (guilty as charged).  We want the latest gadget (again, guilty).  We want and want and want.  But these things will not last.  The car will rust.  The house will fall apart and the swimming pool isn’t all it is cracked up to be.  The clothes wear out or go out of fashion.  The latest gadget will be be obsolete in 3 months — if you’re lucky.
Do not trade Heaven for the stuff of Earth.  Do not trade eternal relationships for temporary things.  Do not let the stuff you want destroy the unity of the church.  Instead, learn to be satisfied and content with what God has already given to you.
PRAYER: O Father God, I am so guilty of letting my desires consume me.  I have traded the good things of You for the temporary things of this world.  There is nothing that this world can offer that is worthy of my affection and devotion that I owe to You.  Help me to be satisfied and content in You today.  Amen.
