The Poisoned Tongue

James 3:7-8 (NIV)
All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
James makes quite the definitive statement in verse 8:

no human being can tame the tongue. – James 3:8 (NIV)

Animals of every kind can be domesticated.  I once saw a video of a wiener dog kissing a lion, but we cannot tame our tongues.  James says that our tongues are full of poison.  He’s right, you know.  Our tongues are deadly and so hard to control.
We cut people to the core with our tongues.  Sarcasm abounds.  Gossip and lies flow like water from our mouths.  Instead of encouraging others, we rip them to shreds with our words.  Instead of building others up, we tear them down just to make ourselves feel better about our own insecurities.
How we need the Holy Spirit to help us control our tongues!  The poison of our words needs the antidote of God’s grace.  On our own, we are incapable of controlling our tongues.  Left up to our own devices, we’ll never be able to use our tongues for their intended purposes – to build others up and to worship God.  We need to be ever mindful of the powerful impact of our words.  Let us commit ourselves to ridding our tongues of their poisonous venom.
