RE-POST: Is It All A Game?

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?  Run in such a way as to get the prize.  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.  They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. — 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 (NIV)

The NFL pre-season kicked off this past weekend.  My favorite team, the Green Bay Packers, defeated the New England Patriots!  Another season has dawned and millions of fans will be glued to their televisions over the next 6 months awaiting the Super Bowl!  The NFL will crown their next champion sometime in early February 2016.  Teams will devote thousands of hours to preparation.  They will endure countless hours of practice.  They will play games and suffer through injuries and heartbreak all to reach the goal of winning the Super Bowl.  But only one team can win that big game.

The apostle Paul tells us that Christians are in a different kind of game — the game of life.  Much like athletes, we must train and work hard in order to overcome hurdles and obstacles and a particularly nasty opponent.  There is one difference between the Christian team and the teams of the NFL.  A Super Bowl ring doesn’t last forever.  The crown of life that is promised to those who remain faithful in the book of Revelation (2:10, NIV) lasts throughout eternity.  May we not get so preoccupied with the things of this world that we take our eyes off of our heavenly prize.  May we fight, struggle, prepare and practice as we face our enemy and may we overcome in Jesus’ name!

What particular struggles are you having in your faith right now?  How can keeping your eyes on the prize help you overcome today’s hurdles and obstacles?

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, in this game of life, I pray that You would help me to be ready to compete for the heavenly prize that You have in store for me.  I want to win this game, but I cannot do so without Your grace.  Help me to keep my eyes on Heaven today.  May the things of this world fade from my sight so that all I see is You.  In the name of the ultimate Victor, Jesus, amen.
