The Blessings Of Perseverance

James 1:12 (NIV)
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
There is much to be said for perseverance in the life of a Christian.  In chapter 1, James says that the follower of Jesus should:
  • Rejoice in trials of various kinds (vs. 3)
  • Pray for wisdom when facing trials (vv. 5-6)
  • Take pride in humble circumstances (vs. 9)
There are rewards for perseverance:
  • It leads to maturity in our faith, which is the goal of faith (vs. 4)
  • God answers the prayers of those who faithfully pray in faith (vs. 5)
  • God exalts the humble (vs. 9)
The final reward for perseverance is the ultimate reward: the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him (vs. 12).
Our sufferings in this life do not go unnoticed.  God sees what we go through and He knows all about our trials.  We are not playing some part in a cosmic drama that ends in tragedy.  We are on a journey toward our heavenly home.  The sufferings and trials through which we persevere are molding and shaping us into what God wants us to be – mature followers who love Jesus.
God sees what you are going through right now.  He’s not distant and far away.  He wants to draw near to you, so draw near to Him.  Do not think for even a moment that God is ignoring you in your situation or circumstances.  Not only does Jesus know all about your troubles, trials and tribulations, but He is cheering you on through the race of your life.  He will be waiting for you at the finish line, so don’t give up.  Keep pressing on for Heaven and fall into the arms of your Savior and you’ll receive your reward.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I am tempted to give up so many times.  I am tired and exhausted from the trials and tests in my life.  I don’t know if I may make it through this day, let alone to the end of my life.  Please give me the strength and perseverance it takes to make it home.  Help me to stand firm in my faith and to not give up.  I need the wisdom and maturity that perseverance produces in my life.  Keep me from falling today.  Amen.
