Only Jesus Saves

Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. 22 But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. – Galatians 3:21-22 (NIV)

I have become more and more convinced that sinless perfection is an impossibility.  Here in Galatians 3, we see that the law of Moses could not impart eternal life.  Righteousness, according to Paul, is not possible through the law.  In other words, you cannot be good enough to be saved.  You cannot:
  • Go to church enough
  • Tithe enough
  • Watch your language enough
  • Do enough kind deeds
  • Share your faith enough
  • Read your Bible enough
  • Pray enough

Don’t get me wrong.  These are all good things to do.  But if you are doing them to earn Heavenly brownie points, you’re quite mistaken.  If you are doing them to be “more saved,” you’re barking up the wrong tree.  There is only ONE way to be saved and that is by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ.  The things I listed above are good things to do, not to save us or keep us saved.  Rather, they are the evidences of someone who has been saved by God’s grace.  Salvation is a FREE gift.  You can’t be good enough to earn it.  You can’t buy it through your tithes and offerings.  You must simply receive it from God’s gracious, loving hand.  We worship Him, tithe, repent, do good deeds, evangelize and do all of those Christian things because we are saved already.  It is out of gratitude that we worship God for He alone is worthy of praise.  It is out of gratitude that we demonstrate our love for Jesus through obedience.  It is out of love for others that we share our faith with them.  For without Jesus, they are lost in their sins.  Quit trying to earn your way to Heaven.  You’re going there!  Trust Jesus for your salvation, not your own efforts at righteousness.  Self-righteousness cannot save you.  Only Jesus can do that.

Galatians 3:15-22 (NIV)

Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. 16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.  Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ. 17 What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. 18 For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

19 Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator. 20 A mediator, however, implies more than one party; but God is one.

21 Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. 22 But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.
