The Ant And The Physicist

There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. – Ecclesiastes 8:14 (NIV)
One of the most difficult questions that Christians are often asked is, “Why do bad things happen to good people?”  It’s such a perplexing question.  Why aren’t people who do good deeds blessed more than those who do wicked, evil things?  Why do those who follow Jesus end up being persecuted for their faith while those who don’t even believe in God’s existence seem to thrive?  Turns out that our generation is not the first to ask such a question.  Solomon noticed it, too.  HE said that it is “meaningless.”  The word meaningless in this particular usage means puzzling.  He doesn’t understand why God does what He does.  Verse 17 says that no one, not even the wisest of the wise can comprehend why God does what He does:

No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it. – Ecclesiastes 8:17 (NIV)

Solomon tells us to enjoy the fruits of our labor and to enjoy life (verse 15) rather than spending our time trying to comprehend God’s plan.  God’s ways are so much higher than our ways.  His thoughts are so much greater than our thoughts.  Our wisdom and knowledge cannot compare with the wisdom and knowledge of God.  We all want the answers to the questions of life.  We want to understand life’s meaning.  I’m sure that ants would like to understand theoretical physics, too, but it’s not going to happen.  God’s plans and purposes are far too great for our finite minds to understand.  So we are better off to enjoy the lives that we’ve been given.  Let us seek to know our Maker and trust that His plan for us is good.  He’s watching over us and desires to be near to us and that’s why He sent Jesus.  To make a loving relationship with our Father possible.  Seek God first today and let His will unfold in your life.
Ecclesiastes 8:14-17 (NIV)
There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless. 15 So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.

16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the labor that is done on earth—people getting no sleep day or night— 17 then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.
