Jesus Changes The Scorecard

There is an interesting dichotomy in this passage.  On one hand Solomon says:

I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. – Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 (NIV)

Then, a few verses later, he says:

“God will bring into judgment
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
a time to judge every deed.” – Ecclesiastes 3:17 (NIV)

There is a reminder of the gift that God gives to each of us, but also a warning of His judgment to come.  Solomon builds upon verses 1-8 where he wrote of a time for every activity under the heavens.  Everything we do will be judged by God.  Every good deed and every wicked thing we may do.  Every act of love and every act of jealousy and envy.  Every humble thought and every action motivated by pride.  Every kind and gentle word and every bit of gossip and every lie we ever told.  Everything will be judged by God, for He knows the score.  Nothing escapes His sight.  He gives good gifts to us all, but expects something in return.  In our pursuit of “eat, drink and be merry,” He expects us to pursue Him.  He expects us to honor Him as the One who gives us every good and perfect gift from Heaven.
For many, knowing that God knows the score should come as a horrifying thought.  They neither pursue nor know God.  For the follower of Jesus, this should be far less terrifying, for God knows not the score, but rather, God knows them.  By putting one’s faith and trust in Christ for salvation by believing in Him, repenting from one’s sins, professing faith in Christ and being baptized, the born again believer is washed clean in the blood of Christ.  The score has been changed!  The scales have been tipped in your favor!  Whereas the wicked stand accused and condemned, the believer in Jesus stands free and forgiven.  This is our hope and it comes through Christ alone.  It goes far beyond this life and into the life eternal.  Don’t waste your life seeking pleasure.  Pursue a relationship with the One who is pursuing you…Jesus.

Ecclesiastes 3:9-17 (NIV)

What do workers gain from their toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.

15 Whatever is has already been,
    and what will be has been before;
and God will call the past to account.

16 And I saw something else under the sun:

In the place of judgment—wickedness was there,
in the place of justice—wickedness was there.

17 I said to myself,

“God will bring into judgment
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
a time to judge every deed.”
