The Question

Two words.  Peter used two simple words to confess the most profound statement of faith.  He answered the most important question in all of human history with two simple words.  Jesus asked Peter and His disciples, “Who do you say I am?” (Luke 9:20, NIV).  Peter replied with two simple words:

God’s Messiah. – Luke 9:20 (NIV)

How will you answer Jesus’ question?  Who do you say that He is?  Is He merely a good teacher?  A prophet of God?  Or is He so much more?  Is He the King of kings and Lord of lords?  Is He the Son of God?  Is He your Savior?  Is He your Master?  How you answer this question determines your eternal destination.  To answer anything other than Savior and Lord is to be doomed to an eternity separated from God.  The question remains the same – “Who do you say I am?”  How ill you answer the question?

Luke 9:18-20 (NIV)

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

18 Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”

19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”

20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”
