The Amazing Words Of Jesus

When I once preached through the Gospel of Luke, I called the series, “The Amazing Story of Jesus.”  Throughout Luke’s Gospel, he repeatedly describes how people were amazed and astonished by Jesus.  Here in Luke 4:31-37, we see that the people were amazed twice by Jesus’ words.  The first time is when He teaches them.  They were amazed because He taught with such authority.  Then, when He cast a demon out of a man, the people were amazed by His powerful words that demonstrated His authority over demons.
The words of Jesus have power and authority even today.  When trials and temptations come our way, we need to remember His words.  Too often we attempt to deal with our problems and situations with our own words.  We give ourselves a pep talk, either in our heads or out loud.  We psych ourselves up with our words instead of relying on the Word of God to give us strength and power to overcome the fears and worries we have.  We can rest assured in the promises of God found in His Word.  Promises to bless us with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Eph. 1:3).  Promises to never leave us or forsake us (Heb. 13:5).  Promises to be our strength (Ps. 59:17), shield (Ps. 119:114) and refuge in times of trouble (Ps. 59:16).  God’s promises are true and the Bible tells us that they are all “yes” in Christ Jesus (2 Cor. 1:20).
Let us cling to the power of God’s Word.  Let us hold on to the promises Jesus has made to us.  He is the Lord and His promises are good and true.

Luke 4:31-37 (NIV)

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

31 Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
