Why Was Jesus Baptized?

Why was Jesus baptized?  We saw earlier in Luke 3 that John the Baptist was preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.  Had Jesus sinned?  Did He need to be forgiven of something?  Absolutely not!  We get a little bit more of the picture from Matthew 3:

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”  15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. – Matthew 3:13-15 (NIV)

It was God’s will that Jesus submit to baptism.  He never sinned according to Hebrews 4:15 (NIV):

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

So He had done nothing for which He needed to be forgiven.  Jesus said that it was “proper” in order “to fulfill all righteousness.”  It was the right thing to do.  Jesus gave us His example of being baptized because it is the right thing to do.  It was not right just for Jesus to be baptized, but rather, everyone everywhere is called to repent and be baptized.  In the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus said that His followers are to go and make disciples of everyone everywhere by baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Spirit and teaching them to obey everything He commanded.
So what about you?  Have you been baptized?  If you are a believer in Jesus and have not been baptized, why not?  What is holding you back?  If Jesus did it and commanded that all nations do it, then why have you not?  It is time to fully surrender and submit to Jesus Christ’s call to be baptized.  Have your sins forgiven and washed away and receive the gift of God’s Spirit as you fulfill this righteous requirement of our Savior.

Luke 3:21-22 (NIV)

The Baptism and Genealogy of Jesus

21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
