Love And The Polar Vortex

This is an article I wrote for our church’s newsletter today.  Thought I would share it with you all.  Have a great day!
-The Pauper

Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. – Matthew 24:12-13 (NIV)

Hasn’t this winter been fun?!?  Not one, but TWO rounds with the dreaded Polar Vortex!  I had never even heard of such a thing until the winter of 2013-2014.  Personally, I don’t care to ever make its acquaintance again.  Due to a buckle in the jetstream, there are unusually warm temperatures in Alaska and bitter, bitter cold temperatures around here.  For example, on January 28th, it was 5 degrees here (Griffith, Indiana) for a high temperature.  It was 43 degrees in Anchorage, Alaska on that same date!  What in the world is going on?!?  I know that it is winter and all, but it’s just not supposed to be this way!

In Matthew 24, Jesus prophesies about what life will be like in the end times.  One of the things He says is that due to increased wickedness in the hearts of people, their love will grow cold.   Increased selfishness and self-centeredness will cause people to look out only for themselves.  There will be a lack of compassion and caring for anyone other than oneself.  It is almost as if there will be a polar vortex of the heart.  The hearts of people will grow bitterly cold as the day of Christ’s return approaches.

During the first round of the Polar Vortex, we had our water lines freeze that go into our kitchen sink.  They run between the dishwasher and the exterior wall.  Because of such bitter cold temperatures, the lines froze.  Thanks to the help of a very kind friend, we were able to thaw out the lines and then insulate them as well as seal up a hole in the wall.  Since we sealed up the hole and insulated the lines, we didn’t have frozen lines again during this last round of the Polar Vortex.

As Christians, we must insulate ourselves from this Polar Vortex of the heart.  Paul wrote to the Thessalonians:

May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else… – 1 Thessalonians 3:12 (NIV)

We need to be seeking to share the love of the Lord Jesus with everyone in our world.  God loves our world and we need to be ambassadors of His love to a cold and loveless world.  God demonstrated His love by sending His Son, Jesus to be our Savior and King.  We who have received His love have the responsibility and privilege of sharing it with others – those inside the church and those outside.
